Worn twenty to twenty-two hours a day and changed as your dentist sets, they move the teeth a little at a time until they sit where the plan put them. What Invisalign fixes, and what it does not.
Aligners move teeth; they do not change the jaws they sit in. That makes them right for most crowding, gaps and crooked front teeth in adults, and wrong for a few things that need a fixed brace or a surgeon. The scan at the consultation tells you which you are.
Invisalign fixes
- Crowded front teeth, one of the most common reasons people come.
- Gaps between teeth, closed by moving the teeth together.
- Crooked or twisted teeth that show when you smile.
- Teeth that have drifted since a brace as a teenager.
- Mild to moderate bite problems: an overbite, an underbite or a crossbite that is in the teeth rather than the jaw.
Invisalign is not for
- Jaws that meet wrongly. When the problem is the size or position of the jaw itself, aligners cannot correct it; that is a referral, not a plan.
- Very large rotations or tooth movements, where a fixed brace does the job better.
- Anyone who will not wear them. Aligners work only while they are in; under twenty hours a day the plan runs late or stalls. If that is you, say so, and a fixed brace is the honest answer.
- Gums or teeth that need treating first. Gum disease and decay are sorted before any tooth is moved.

Your first aligners are fitted. Some teeth get small tooth-coloured attachments that help the aligners grip; they come off at the end.

You change aligners at home on the days your dentist sets and come in at intervals so the movement is checked against the plan.

When the teeth are where the plan put them, retainers are made to hold them there. Teeth drift back over the years without one.
What it is like
Twenty-two hours a day, out for meals.
Each new set feels tight for a day or two, because it is moving your teeth; that is the treatment working, and it eases as the teeth settle. There are no wires to rub your cheeks. Most people lisp slightly for the first few days and then stop noticing the aligners at all.
You take them out to eat and to drink anything other than water, brush or at least rinse, and put them straight back in. That is the whole discipline: wear time decides how well the treatment works. From a normal talking distance nobody sees them; the small attachments some teeth need show only close up.

How much does Invisalign cost?
At Designer Smiles it starts from £999 for Invisalign Express, seven aligners for minor movements or a little relapse after a brace, and most smiles fall into one of four plans: Lite at £2,195, Moderate at £2,495, Comprehensive at £2,895 and Complex at £3,295. The scan at the free consultation decides which is yours, because the distance the teeth must move sets the number of aligners. Every plan includes tooth whitening once the teeth are straight and a set of removable retainers.
Can I pay monthly?
Yes. 0% finance through Tabeo over up to twelve months is available on every plan, arranged at the consultation once your price is known; the practice offers no interest-bearing option.
How long does Invisalign take?
Four to six months for the simplest cases, six to nine for most, nine months or more where teeth have a long way to go. Your own timeline is on the plan you see at the consultation. One thing shortens or lengthens it more than any other: how many hours a day the aligners are in.
How many hours a day do I wear them?
Twenty to twenty-two. They come out to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush, then go straight back in. The aligners only move your teeth while they are in.
Does it hurt?
Not in the way people fear. Each new set feels tight or tender for a day or two, because it is moving the teeth, then it settles. There are no wires or brackets to rub. Ordinary painkillers cover the first day of a new set if you want them.
Will people notice?
Not from a normal talking distance. The aligners are clear and fit closely over the teeth. Some teeth need small tooth-coloured attachments so the aligners can grip; those show close up and come off at the end.
Can I eat and drink normally?
Yes, with the aligners out. Water is fine with them in; food and hot or coloured drinks stain and warp the plastic. Brush, or at least rinse, before they go back in.
Is Invisalign different from the cheaper aligners sold online?
The plastic is similar; the dentistry is not. Here a dentist examines your teeth and gums and takes x-rays before anything moves, plans the case from a scan of your own teeth, fits attachments where the aligners need grip, checks the movement at intervals and fixes problems in the chair. Remote-only kits skip the examination and the reviews, which is what most of the price difference buys.
Can I get Invisalign on the NHS?
No. Invisalign is private treatment everywhere in the UK. NHS orthodontics, where it is offered at all, is for under-18s with a clinical need and uses fixed braces. Ours starts from £999.
Do I need retainers afterwards?
Yes, for good. Teeth drift back over the years after any straightening; a retainer worn at night holds them. A set is included with every Invisalign plan; a replacement set later is £150 per arch.
What if I lose or break an aligner?
Call 0121 709 3821. Depending on where you are in the plan you will be told to go back to the previous set or move on to the next while a replacement is made. Do not skip ahead without asking.
