Crowns, Bridges & Veneers

What are Crowns?

A crown is a type of restoration used for the full coverage of a tooth (like a cap).

In order to fit a crown, which is ordinarily made from metal or porcelain with metal, the old tooth must be drilled down to form a small peg-like shape. The crown can then be fixed onto this.

Crowns are mostly used when the tooth is compromised by already having either a larger restoration, root treatment, or when a large chunk of the tooth surface is chipped and therefore is difficult to treat with normal restorations such as fillings.

What are Bridges?

A bridge can be used to fill the space or gap where a single tooth or multiple teeth are missing or have been removed. If the gap is not closed, the neighboring teeth may begin to slowly tilt or shift towards this space, leading to bite and jaw problems and possibly periodontal disease. A typical bridge consists of a replacement tooth attached to one or two surrounding crowns, and this structure is bonded into the mouth.

The bridge procedure

During your initial visit, the surrounding teeth are cleaned to remove plaque or decay and lightly shaped so that the bridge will fit easily. A mold of the teeth is taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where a customized bridge will be prepared. In the meantime, you’ll be fitted with a temporary bridge made of acrylic resin.

When your bridge has been made, the temporary bridge can be removed so that the permanent one is mounted and adjusted to produce the proper bite and fit. It is then bonded into the mouth. It is important that the gum line and area surrounding the new structure are kept clean, and a special floss is often necessary to clean underneath the teeth and maintain strong, healthy gums. With proper dental care, bridges can last up to 10 years.

What are Veneers?

Over time, teeth can become discolored, worn, crooked, or spaced. Veneers are a thin covering that layers over your individual teeth, significantly improving their appearance while maintaining a natural look. Veneers can be fabricated from various materials but are typically made using composite or porcelain.

Benefits of Veneers

Dental veneers offer an extensive range of benefits for those looking to improve the appearance and performance of their teeth. Whether you are looking to cover chips, cracks, or discoloration, veneers can be the perfect solution to your dental issues. This low-maintenance dental solution requires no extra work compared to the maintenance you would carry out for natural teeth.
