Turkey teeth, veneers and bonding · Designer Smiles, Solihull

Before you book the flight, the whole comparison.

Veneers, crowns and composite bonding in Turkey cost less up front, often a great deal less. Here is what the package price includes and what it leaves out, beside what the same smile costs at Designer Smiles: composite bonding from £200 a tooth, porcelain veneers £800, and a trial smile in the mirror before a tooth is touched.

In short

Are Turkey teeth veneers?

Usually not. “Turkey teeth” is the name that has stuck to the full-coverage crowns most package clinics fit: each tooth is filed down on every side to a peg and a crown is cemented over it, and that tooth needs a crown for the rest of your life. A porcelain veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of the tooth, with a fraction of a millimetre of enamel removed. Composite bonding removes nothing. The first thing to find out from any quote, here or abroad, is which of the three you are being sold.

Reading the quote

What the package price includes, and what it does not.

The prices on the clinic websites are real, and for many people the work turns out fine. The comparison only becomes honest when the whole of it is on the table.

The package usually includes

  • The treatment itself, priced for the full set rather than per tooth.
  • The hotel and the transfers, often, which is why the headline figure reads like a holiday.
  • A finished smile inside a week, because full crowns can be prepared and fitted faster than veneers or bonding.
  • A consultation on the day you arrive, once the flight is paid for.

What it leaves out

  • Flights, time off work, and the return trips if anything needs adjusting.
  • The years afterwards. Crowns and veneers need checking and eventually replacing; bonding needs polishing and the occasional repair.
  • Anyone within reach when a crown comes off on a Sunday or a tooth under one starts to ache.
  • The UK’s safety net: a dentist on the General Dental Council register, indemnity insurance, and the Dental Complaints Service if something goes wrong. The GDC’s own advice on treatment abroad is worth ten minutes.
  • A second opinion before the teeth are cut. Enamel does not grow back, and a tooth prepared for a crown cannot go back to being a tooth.

The two roads

A week abroad, or a few weeks here.

The package, in a week

  1. 1

Arrive. The consultation is the same day, with the flight already paid for.

  2. 2

Teeth prepared, usually the next day, and temporaries fitted.

  3. 3

Final crowns or veneers fitted within the week, once the laboratory has made them.

  4. 4

Fly home. Adjustments and aftercare happen by message, or on a second trip.

Designer Smiles, over a few weeks

  1. 1

Free consultation with the 3D facial and oral scan. No putty, no commitment.

  2. 2

The design on screen and a trial smile in the mirror, changed until it is right, before any tooth is touched.

  3. 3

The price in writing, per tooth, with 0% finance if you want to spread it.

  4. 4

Treatment: one visit for bonding, two or three for veneers, with the temporaries made here.

  5. 5

Check-ups and repairs from the people who did the work, for as long as you have it.

Why the gap is so wide

Where the difference in price comes from.

Costs are lower in Turkey, wages and rents included, and the clinics work at volume: a full set of crowns for a patient who flies home on Friday. Full crowns are also quicker and more forgiving to fit than veneers, which is part of why so many packages are crowns. None of that makes the work bad. Some of it is excellent, some of it is not, and from Solihull you cannot tell which you will get.

A UK price is built differently. It is per tooth, so you pay for the teeth that need treating and no more. The porcelain comes from a UK laboratory, the dentist is registered and insured here, and the aftercare is part of the price rather than a flight away. For most people the honest gap is not cheap against expensive; it is one payment against a smile that is looked after for as long as you have it.

What it costs here

The same smile, priced by the tooth.

Bonding is charged per tooth, veneers per tooth, crowns per tooth. One chipped tooth is one tooth; a smile line is usually the six to ten teeth that show. The figure for your own plan is written down at the free consultation, before anything is decided, with the practice’s 0% finance through Tabeo if you want to spread it.

Side by side

Three treatments, here and there.

The same three treatments are sold in both places. What differs is what is done to the tooth, how the price is built, and who is there afterwards.

We fit crowns when a tooth needs one. We do not fit them to healthy front teeth for the sake of the colour, because bonding or veneers do that job without taking the tooth away.

If you have already been

Back from Turkey and something is wrong?

Book an examination. We look, take the x-rays that are needed, tell you what is there and what it would cost to put right, and that is all; nobody here is interested in telling you off. A loose crown can be recemented, a chipped veneer or bonding repaired, an aching tooth treated.

What we cannot do is undo the preparation: a tooth cut for a crown will always need a crown, and repairing work we did not place is charged as new work, because it is. The examination starts from £27.90, and if you are in pain the emergency appointment is the same figure, £27.90.

Dr Aadam Binamin, Dr Uthmaan Binamin and Dr Abbaas Binamin design smiles on the practice’s 3D facial and oral scanner, with a trial smile tried in before any porcelain or resin is made, and they are the people you see afterwards. All three are on the General Dental Council register.

Questions

Asked before people decide.

How much do Turkey veneers cost?

The package clinics publish their own prices and they vary, so check the one you are looking at, then add the flights, the hotel if it is not included, the time off and any return trip. Here porcelain veneers are £800 a tooth and composite bonding £200 – £250 a tooth, with the consultation and the trial smile free.

Are Turkey teeth the same as veneers?

Usually not. Most of the packages are full-coverage crowns, for which the tooth is filed to a peg on every side; a veneer is a thin shell on the front of the tooth with far less enamel removed, and bonding removes none. Ask any clinic, here or abroad, which of the three it is quoting for.

Is it worth going to Turkey for veneers?

On price alone, usually yes: it is cheaper. On everything else it depends how much you value a trial smile before your teeth are touched, a dentist you can reach for the next fifteen years, and the UK’s regulation if something goes wrong. Plenty of people go and are happy. Our job is to make sure you are comparing the whole thing, not the headline figure.

Will UK dentists touch Turkey teeth?

Most will examine and treat you. What they will not do is take responsibility for work they did not place, so repairs are charged as new work, and some dentists decline the more complex remedial cases. Here the examination starts from £27.90 and you are told plainly what is possible.

Which country is cheapest for veneers or bonding?

Turkey is among the cheapest and by far the most heavily marketed to the UK; several other countries undercut UK prices too. Price alone does not tell you what is being done to the tooth, and that is the question that decides how the next twenty years go.

How long do Turkey teeth last?

Crowns anywhere last around ten to fifteen years before they need replacing, and a tooth that has been crowned needs a crown for life. Someone crowned at twenty-five can expect to replace the set several times, and each replacement costs, wherever it is done.

Can Turkey teeth be reversed?

No. Enamel that has been removed does not grow back. A crown can be replaced with a better crown, and a veneer with another veneer, but the tooth underneath stays as it was prepared. That is why the trial smile here happens before anything is cut, and why bonding, which removes nothing, is the first thing we suggest for small changes.

What about composite bonding in Turkey?

Bonding is the treatment that most needs the dentist nearby: it is polished at check-ups and repaired now and then over its life, and a chip abroad is a flight, while a chip here is one short visit. Bonding at Designer Smiles is £200 – £250 a tooth, removes no enamel, and is done in one visit after the trial smile.

What goes wrong most often?

The things any dentist sees with crowns and veneers wherever they were fitted: sensitivity after preparation, a crown that comes loose, a chipped veneer, gums that do not settle around a crown edge. We cannot tell you these happen more often abroad. What we can tell you is that when they happen, the dentist who did the work is a flight away, and the one down the road is starting from scratch.

Can I fly home straight after?

Yes; flying is not the problem. The problem is that a new bite often wants a small adjustment in the first weeks, and abroad that adjustment happens by message or on a second trip. Here it is a ten-minute appointment.
