A missing tooth replaced with one that stays.
A dental implant is a small titanium root placed in the jaw, with a crown made to match your other teeth on top. At Designer Smiles a single implant with its crown is from £1,700, planned on a CBCT scan of your jaw, with a free consultation first and the figure for your own mouth in writing before anything starts.
In short
What an implant is.
A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jaw where a tooth’s root used to be. Over a few months the bone grows onto it, and a crown made to match your other teeth is fitted on top. The result is a tooth you bite with, brush and floss like your own, that does not lean on the teeth either side and keeps the bone in your jaw working.
Is it right for you?
Who implants suit, and who they do not.
Implants suit most adults with one or more missing teeth who would rather have a fixed tooth than a bridge or a denture. The scan at the consultation answers the questions below for your own mouth; here is what it looks for.
An implant needs
- Enough bone in the jaw to hold it. A tooth missing for years often leaves less; the CBCT scan shows exactly how much there is, and bone grafting can build it up.
- Healthy gums. Gum disease is treated first, because an implant in inflamed gums is an implant at risk.
- A fully grown jaw, so implants are for adults, not teenagers.
- General health that lets bone heal. Some conditions and medicines slow healing; the consultation asks about them.
- No smoking, or a decision to stop around the treatment. It is the single habit that most lowers an implant’s chance of fusing and lasting.
If an implant is not right
- A bridge: a false tooth carried by crowns on the teeth beside it, priced per unit at £400 a unit; the smallest bridge is two units, and more units cost more. Fixed, quicker, and the answer when the neighbours need crowns anyway. The crowns and bridges page sets it out.
- A denture: removable, from £332.10 a jaw, and the lowest cost now. It leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched.
- Several missing teeth: an implant bridge, or a full arch held on a small number of implants, planned the same way from the scan.
- The consultation sets the three side by side for your mouth rather than assuming the answer. All three are on the same fee guide.
How it runs
Six steps, over a few months.
- 1
Free consultation, then the scan
Your mouth and gums examined and a CBCT scan taken: a 3D x-ray that shows the bone in your jaw in detail. The scan, not a guess, decides whether an implant will hold and whether a graft is needed.
- 2
Your plan and your price
What the treatment involves for your case, how long it should take and what it costs, in writing, before you decide anything.
- 3
Bone grafting, if you need it
Where the bone is too thin or too shallow, it is built up first and left to heal before the implant goes in. Most people do not need it; the scan says.
- 4
Placement
The implant is placed in the jaw under local anaesthetic, with sedation available if you want it. The visit takes about an hour, and you go home the same day.
- 5
Healing
Over the following months the bone fuses to the titanium. If the gap shows, you wear a temporary tooth in the meantime, and you eat soft for the first week or so.
- 6
The crown
Once the implant is solid, a crown made to match your other teeth is fitted to it. From then on it is brushed, flossed and checked like the rest.
What it is like
Numb for the placement, sore for a few days.
The placement is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure rather than pain; sedation at £350 a session is there for anyone who would rather not be aware of it. Afterwards the area is sore and a little swollen for a few days, the kind of discomfort ordinary painkillers handle, and you eat soft food for the first week or so.
Then comes the wait while the bone fuses, which is the part people underestimate: nothing much happens on the surface while the bone does its work underneath. When the crown goes on, the implant is cleaned exactly like a natural tooth, and it needs it: the gum around an implant can become inflamed just as gum around a tooth can. Regular hygiene visits are how implants last.
What it costs
The implant, the crown and the scan, itemised.
A single implant, including the crown, starts from £1,700. The figure for your own mouth depends on what the scan shows, above all whether the bone needs building up first, so it is written down at the consultation before you commit to anything. Several implants, an implant-supported bridge or a full arch are planned and priced from your scan. On a membership plan you get 10% off treatment.
From the Designer Smiles fee guide, October 2026. The free consultation is held with a refundable deposit, returned when you attend and lost on a no-show or a cancellation inside 24 hours.
Implant, bridge or denture
Three ways to fill a gap, set side by side.
The question people bring most often is implant or bridge. Here is the honest comparison, with the denture beside them because it is the third real option.
| What happens | Neighbouring teeth | How long it lasts | Price here | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Implant | A titanium root in the jaw with its own crown; several months | Untouched | Decades with care | From £1,700 | A gap between healthy teeth, enough bone, a fixed tooth for the long term |
| Bridge | A false tooth carried by crowns on the teeth beside it; two units at the least; two visits | Shaped to take crowns | Ten years, often longer | From £400 a unit | A gap whose neighbours already need crowns, or when implants are ruled out |
| Denture | A removable plate carrying the missing tooth or teeth | Untouched | Years; relined as the gum changes | From £332.10 a jaw | Several missing teeth, or the lowest cost now |
Implants abroad are usually cheaper up front. What the price does not include is the ten years afterwards: the check-ups, the crown’s eventual replacement, and someone within reach if the gum around the implant flares or the crown loosens. Many UK dentists will not take on remedial work on an implant they did not place. The same comparison for veneers, crowns and bonding is on its own page.
Who places it

Dr Mohammed Binamin · master’s in implantology
At present Dr Abbaas Binamin, Dr Uthmaan Binamin and Dr Mohammed Binamin place the implants at Designer Smiles. Every case starts with a CBCT scan of your jaw, and the plan and the price are set from what it shows. Dr Aadam Binamin, the principal dentist, built the practice around digital planning, with a 3D facial scanner and an intraoral scanner in every surgery, and all six of the practice’s dentists are on the General Dental Council register.

Questions
Asked before people book.
How much does a dental implant cost?
At Designer Smiles a single implant, including the crown that goes on it, starts from £1,700. If your jaw needs building up first, bone grafting starts from £350 and a sinus graft is £1,150. The implant consultation is free, held with a refundable deposit, and the figure for your own mouth is written down once your scan has been read.
How painful is getting a dental implant?
The placement is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but not pain, and sedation is available if you would rather not be aware of it. Afterwards, expect the area to be sore and a little swollen for a few days, the kind of discomfort ordinary painkillers handle, and soft food for the first week or so. Most people find it easier than they feared.
How long does it take?
Longer than most treatments, because the implant has to fuse with your bone before the crown goes on. Allow several months from placement to finished tooth; where a graft is needed first, longer. Your dentist gives you the timeline for your own case at the consultation.
How long do dental implants last?
The implant itself, the titanium post in the bone, is expected to last decades and often a lifetime; implants placed in the 1980s are still in service. The crown on top is a working surface and wears like any crown, so it typically needs replacing after ten to fifteen years, which is a much smaller job than the implant. What decides the outcome is clean gums: brush and floss around the implant, keep your hygiene visits, and do not smoke.
How many teeth can one implant replace?
One implant carries one crown; two or more implants can carry a bridge of several teeth, and a full arch can be held on a small number of implants. Which arrangement suits you depends on how many teeth are missing and where; it is planned from your scan.
Can I get dental implants on the NHS?
Only in limited circumstances, such as after certain cancers or injuries, and through a hospital referral rather than a high-street practice. For almost everyone implants are private treatment. If you are entitled to free NHS dental care, the NHS options for a gap are a bridge or a denture.
Are dental implants worth the money?
If you want a fixed tooth you clean like your own, that does not rely on the neighbouring teeth and keeps the bone in your jaw working, yes. If you would be content with a bridge or a denture, those cost less: here a bridge starts from £400 per unit and an acrylic denture from £332.10 per jaw. The consultation is where the three are set side by side for your mouth.
Why are implants so expensive in the UK?
You are paying for a surgical procedure, a titanium implant made to medical standards, a custom crown, the planning scans, and the dentist’s time over several visits and months. Prices vary between practices because all of those vary. Ours are published, so you can compare like with like.
What is the downside of dental implants?
They take months, they cost more than a bridge or denture, and they need the same care as natural teeth: gums that are not kept clean can become inflamed around an implant just as they do around a tooth. Smoking and some medical conditions lower the success rate, which is why the consultation asks about both.
Do I need a bone graft?
Only if the scan shows there is not enough bone to hold the implant, which is common when a tooth has been missing for a long time. The CBCT scan answers it before anything is planned; the graft, if needed, is priced in the fee guide.
Is it cheaper to get implants in Turkey?
Usually yes, up front. What the cheaper price does not include is the years afterwards: check-ups, the crown’s eventual replacement, and someone nearby to see if anything goes wrong. Many UK dentists will not take on remedial work on an implant they did not place. If you are weighing it, weigh the whole ten years, not the first week.
